LAS BIEN MUERTAS

This piece was conceived in response to the rise in femicides seen daily in Mexico. Femicides are killings committed for reasons related to gender. A Mexican idiom for an ice cold beer is “La quiero bien muerta,” which literally translates to “I want her dead as dead”. I use this literal translation to make a point about the violence and objectification women face in my country every day by creating beer labels highlighting this issue.
In 2021 I commemorated three women who were murdered that year: Janeth Rubí, María del Pilar González and Isabel Cabanillas and created portraits of them for the labels.
